How to reduce your carbon footprint with resin furniture Choosing the right patio set is not an easy decision. Wood and metal are common choices, but apart from the risk or rot and rust, they can be extremely costly and difficult to maintain and too heavy to move. Nylon and plastic films are cheaper, but fragile. The best way forward is to choose furniture made of resin, a plastic solid that can be made to look like real wood, is easy to clean, lift and store, and comes with sticker shock, much less. One of the best things about resin is that a lot these days is made from recycled materials, so you can go green in style.
Many outdoor resin furniture is made of HDPE using 100% recycled post-consumer. This is a high density polyethylene in the packaging, the most recognizable in milk jugs, but also in detergent bottles, margarine tubs, and garbage. HDPE is melted into a kind of plastic timber which is then redirected to the furniture. Each pound of recycled HDPE is roughly equivalent to eight bottles of milk in value. Eight bottles of milk is less in a landfill somewhere.
Some cabinets are also using Richlite OCC. It is 50% old corrugated cardboard (OCC), mixed with 50% of Pacific Northwest softwood pulp. It has a fibrous appearance because of its natural composition and paper made good on the outside with little maintenance required. It can also commonly be found in the kitchen countertops because of its resistance to heat and humidity. Richlite OCC has a naturally rich color and warmth that does not require painting or die.
Some companies even "green" their production methods as well. To offset carbon emissions generated by transporting resin furniture and products, companies can engage in renewable energy and efficient methods, reforestation projects or supporting national organizations such as the Carbon Fund. If enough is done to offset the carbon emissions One, a company (or person) can claim to be carbon neutral.
Also along the lines of transportation, packaging of products can produce as much waste as the products themselves, and construction waste that ends up in landfills. One way to counter this is the use of recycled cardboard boxes and padding. By combining recycled paperboard with recycled resin furniture, no new materials are used. In addition, the smaller boxes used, the cheaper the postage and more that can fit on a single journey by truck, plane or boat. Some shipping companies themselves, including UPS, have begun to engage in eco-initiatives.
Even if you do not find recycled resin furniture where you live, new resin furniture is always a great buy. Choosing plastic over wood engravings down on deforestation and destruction of natural habitats. In addition, the resin is life, so you will not have to discard it and buy a new game a few years. Greening's life should not mean the abandonment of small luxuries. Use energy efficient light bulbs and energy saving devices can not only the environment, it also reduces your monthly bills. If everyone does his part, life will be a little greener for generations upon generations to come.
